Sadly, I've not been able to do much with my own music, either; but, I do listen and keep up with how independent artists are faring. One of these is Ellis Paul. He was a principal leader in the wave of singer/songwriters that emerged from the Boston folk scene with a folk-pop style that helped renew interest in the genre in the 1990's, a genre that I've never lost interest in.

I recently had the pleasure of hearing one of his signature songs: "Jukebox On My Grave," first released in 2005 on American Jukebox Fables. I immediately went to iTunes and bought it. Now, I'm previewing everything he's done, a pretty substantial list--he's put out 16 albums, his latest being Ellis Paul-The Dragonfly Races.

Highly recommended. Check him out.

Cheers!
Kenny

The Eagles - Long Road Out Of Eden

I can't believe that in my posting about my top ten songwriters I didn't include Don Henley, Glen Frye, Joe Walsh, and the Eagles, et al. This group has been on my favorite list since the '70's. They've just released a new double-CD album that is completely fabulous, Long Road Out Of Eden. For songwriters, this is a must-have. Completely captivating melodies mixed with graphic and meaningful lyrics that actually communicate messages worth hearing will keep you interested.

Oh, don't think think this is a concept album where everything begins to take on the same flavor - it's not. The group is, in typical Eagles fashion, all over the musical spectrum: upbeat, downbeat, ballads, hard rock, country-folk.

My pick hit is "Do Something," a fine ballad with a good piece of advice that we can all identify with. That's followed closely by "Waiting In The Weeds," a song about how life changes and that there's always hope.

For us songwriters, there are plenty of why-didn't-I-think-of-that-line moments. And the melodies -- oh, my! I have to describe some of them as truly innovative. You have to listen to these songs!

OK, OK, here's a lyric clip from the chorus of "Do Something:"

But when I feel like giving up
And I'm ready to walk away
In the stillness, I can hear
A voice inside me say
Do something
Do something
It's too late for saving face
Don't just stand there takin' up space
Why don't you do something?
Do something
It's not over
No, it's never too late

The melody and harmonies that go with this lyric will blow your mind. Really. Go buy the album and give it a listen.
You won't regret it. Hell, it may become one of your most-listened-to CDs.
Cheers!
Kenny

Please Listen And Comment On My Music

I do almost no self-promotion. And I haven't played in public for several years. That's almost certainly why I'm not widely known. My ill-fated excursions into the Nashville music scene 15 years ago nearly destroyed me as a songwriter and artist. Despite, or, perhaps, because of that I continue to keep going. I've never lost sight of my dream to get my music heard and I never will.

Life seems to get in the way of our dreams sometimes, however, and that's why I'm behind in my goal of releasing a CD. I had targeted that goal for the first part of 2007; I've obviously missed that target. My new target is the end of 2008.

I could use your help. The hardest thing for me all along has been to figure out which of my more than 150 songs I should record. I need you listen to the songs I've posted on my Music page and give me feedback on the ones you think I should release. And be honest with me, OK? If you don't like a song, say so and tell me why. I really appreciate your help; in fact, if you post feedback and give me your email address, I'll give you a free CD when it's finally released, maybe even a mention in the liner notes.

While you're at it, let me know what you'd like to see more of on The Singing Songwriter.

Thanks!
Kenny

One of my all-time favorite songs

It starts out "And when I see the sign that points one way..." and it just gets better from there.

"Walk Away Renee" has to be one of my all-time favorite songs. Its simple, yet emotional lyrics move me in a way I can't explain--even though I don't know exactly what the writer is saying. But the song communicates the pain and sense of loss in a way that few songs manage to do.

I've worked out a folky, acoustic guitar version of this song that punches up the emotion even more, if that's possible, and it's one of my favorite songs to perform.

I have others, but I'll tell you about them later (Emmylou Harris and Hank Williams come to mind; maybe I'll record them and post links...maybe.)

Warning: If You're Not Listening to Pandora's Podcasts, You're Missing Something Incredible.

Back in February I posted 'Pandora Podcasts are a "Must Listen" for Songwriters' and wrote this:

Pandora plans to continue this series delving deeper and deeper into what makes music tick. I guarantee you'll learn something with every one of them. I did. And I've been at this music stuff for more than 40 years.
Here's the link: http://blog.pandora.com/podcast/

Since that post, Pandora has produced nine more Podcasts bringing the total to 15. I'll say this again: these podcasts are a "must listen," not only for songwriters, but for musicians, too. Hell, even producers should pay attention to this stuff. Want to know what makes a particular style sound the way it does? Then listen to these podcasts. The folks at Pandora know what they're talking about.
This should pique your curiosity:

Much of the music we love exists in four-beat measures. Why is this? Why is 4/4 so natural? We heard the music as soon as we got out of the car. "The Orange Blossom Special" was heading full speed down the tracks, brought to life by a fine bluegrass ensemble playing in front of the Goose Girl fountain. There was something familiar about their sound and as I got closer, it began to dawn on me. It was the fiddle--I'd heard it before.

I stood there, listening, until they finished. I was disappointed to hear them give their final "thank you." I wanted more. My disappointment soon turned to elation, however, as I realized why that fiddle sounded so familiar: it was being played by a friend I hadn't seen in 30 years--Paul Patterson. Member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Second Violins; member of the Faux Frenchmen; and once upon a time, for one wild year back in the late 70's, my musical partner and mentor.

Paul taught me more about music in our all-too-brief association than I learned from anyone before, or since. But the biggest lesson I learned from him isn't about music at all--it's about using your abilities. Paul is so far ahead of me as a musician, it isn't funny. Yet, he never criticized me or pointed out my flaws; rather, he validated my strengthts and played into them. He and I sounded great together--I have tapes to prove it. But that's what Paul does--he makes everyone sound great.

I'm no slouch as a songwriter, but I haven't had a lot of commercial success. I've been around, with cuts on three albums out of Nashville: The Return; This is Tim Hadler; and, Teacups and Rodeos. Every artist who has done my songs has done them well, but they are not the same without Paul's musicianship.

I've been working for the last seven years to perfect my songwriting and compile my first album. And you can bet that I will have Paul playing on that album, whatever it takes.

Oh! The lesson: do the best you can with the abilities you have and do it to professional standards. And never think you are less than anyone else. You are who you are.

Cheers!

Kenny

My Top "Ten" Singing Songwriters

On any given day, this list would be different; my musical background, my love of all types of music, prohibits me from making a firm "top ten" list. For those of you who are thinking Nashville, Tennessee, think again. Nashville may be Music City USA, but it ain't where the music started. While Country's roots can be traced back to folk and Celtic music originating in Europe, the official birthplace of Country music is Bristol, Tennessee.

The right answer is Bristol, Tennessee. Bristol is on the Tennessee and Virginia border, where Appalachian mountain folk music has been popular for generations. Many of the fiddle tunes and song styles came over from the British Isles in the 1700s.

In 1927, Ralph Peer of Victor Records...went to Bristol, Tennessee, to record local musicians. He thought that old-time and "hillbilly" musicians could be found there. Two local acts signed recording contracts -- the Carter Family from Virginia and former railroad worker Jimmie Rodgers of North Carolina.... They both became successful nationwide. The Carter Family formed the core of several generations of popular country musicians, and Rodgers's 1928 recording of "Blue Yodel" became one of the first country records to sell a million copies!
These early Bristol recordings laid the groundwork for much of the country music that followed. Because Bristol is not usually thought of as the place where country music began, it was especially important that the U.S. Congress recognized Bristol's contribution to music history. In 1998, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Bristol as the "Birthplace of Country Music."

Driving through Bristol, especially through the center of town, where you can literally put one foot in Tennessee and one foot in Virginia, gave us a sense of history. We didn't visit the museum, but we did make the trek on Saturday night to the Carter Family Fold where we heard some great music performed by The Jeanette Williams Band.

One of the most enjoyable features of the Carter Family Fold performance center is the dance floor. I don't dance, but it was quite an experience to watch the folks who do. Down there, they call it "flat foot dancing." More common names are "buck dancing" and "klogging."

As you can see in the photo, this is beautiful country and it was hard to leave. I felt like I had come home. The highlight of the trip for me was an offer (which I declined, due to being out-of-practice) to perform on the stage as a guest artist. But, I made arrangements for an appearance the next time I'm in town.

And it won't be long before my next visit.

Help Save Internet Radio

This is important. I listen to music on the Internet and I don't want to be forced to give up the excellent and diverse programming available on Internet radio stations like Pandora. Please take action. I'm posting Tim Westergren's (Pandora's Founder) letter here:

Hi, it's Tim from Pandora,
I'm writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays and broadcast radio doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.
In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.
Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to act to save Internet radio: http://capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/issues/alert/?alertid=9631541
Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more petitioners we can get, the better.
Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former touring musician myself, I'm no stranger to the challenges facing working musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster's business potential.
I hope you'll take just a few minutes to sign our petition - it WILL make a difference. As a young industry, we do not have the lobbying power of the RIAA. You, our listeners, are by far our biggest and most influential allies.
As always, and now more than ever, thank you for your support.

-Tim Westergren
(Pandora founder)

Pandora Podcasts are a "Must Listen" for Songwriters

In my last post, Pandora Rocks! , I introduced you to Pandora's personalized music service. You can choose anything you want for your playlist, the kind of music you like, the artists you like, your favorite songs. You can program any station any way you want to impress whomever you want and you can shuffle the stations any way you want to create the most unique mix you've ever heard. The computer will choose the music based on your preferences. Want more of a certain sound? Give it a thumbs up. Want less? Give it a thumbs down. I've been "training" my station for a couple of days and it just keeps on giving me great music. I've given many more thumbs-ups than thumbs-down. And you won't just be fed music from "popular" artists; in fact, you'll hear many artists you've never heard of.

This is Pandora.

Go there. First time users don't have to register, so you can play with it with no worries. I registered. Punch in an artist's name or a song name. Point your mouse at the album icon and vote thumbs-up or thumbs-down on every song you hear for a while and see what happens. Experiment. Set up more stations. Enjoy yourself. Shenandoah have righfully earned their status as a country music institution. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Journeys."

What can you say about a band that has had 12 number one hits, six in the top ten, 25 charted songs, and a Grammy? All their praises have been sung by much more well-known reviewers than me. Any country music fan will immediately recognize them. So please indulge me while I deliver a personal anecdote that proves Shenandoah's universal appeal, their ability to touch people well outside the boundaries of country music.

My wife, who is very particular in her musical tastes, was sitting at her craft bench when I put Shenandoah's newest release, Journeys, into the CD player. Bear in mind that she is used to my reviewing a lot of independent artists and wasn't aware I was actually reviewing a well-known group. Nor is she a big country music fan, and most of the time turns her nose up to the indie releases. Like I said, she's particular. She was quiet through the first cut, "Same Boat Now," but about a third of the way into "Mr. One Man Band," she said, "...I'd buy that record and I don't usually listen to unknown artists; they're really good." Indeed! They're great!

"Mr. One Man Band" has to be one of the hit single releases of this album. Mike McGuire is in top form on this one, with his decade-of-time shifts in each iteration of the chorus, grabbing the heartstrings of everyone who remembers the fifties to the seventies, and the music of Elvis, The Beatles, and The Eagles."Running Cause I Can't Fly" is the party dance hit track and, no surprise, another McGuire composition. And the ballad hit (every album needs a ballad hit, right?) is "When You Were Mine". Check out this chorus:

You're looking well, I can tell
That you're different now
The change has done you good
But seeing you makes me think of the way we loved
Once upon a time
And I miss who you were when you were mine

If we had a "best humorous" category, "Right" would have to be at the top of the list. You simply have to go to the website and check out the clip for this song--it'll have you rolling on the floor, laughing. And while you're there, be sure to download "Mr. One Man Band"--it's a freebie. Surely, this tune is the band's pick single. I don't disagree.

This album is pure country gold from start to finish. Shenandoah have righfully earned their status as a country music institution. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Journeys. I promise you won't regret it.

Web site: http://www.shenandoaband.com

This review also appears in the latest issue of Music News Nashville.
The Gypsy Sons

"A hot-chicks-on-the-make, drinks-lined-up-on-the-bar, hell-raisin' rocker..."

Forgive me if I borrow from this band's own description, but this CD is, without a doubt, "good stuff from the all-american bad boys of southern rock and country soul". I couldn't say it any better than that, unless I tell you that it feels like Led Zeppelin meets Merle Haggard. Hell, the way they start out the album with "Long Gone"--sort of like Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner," only in this case borrowing from "Amazing Grace"--you wonder if these guys are reincarnated 60's rockers; they could very well be Lynrd Skynrd's band coming back for another round, for that matter. I'd buy this record in a heartbeat, if I could. But this self-produced (apparently) work doesn't seem to be available anywhere. They need to remedy that!

If you're ready to party, The Gypsy Sons are right there with you. This is hard-driving southern rock that is perfect for a beer-drinking-let's-get-drunk-and-rowdy Saturday night. Or Friday. Or any other night of the week. "Motorway" says it all: "...it's hard to keep a bad man down." This is a hot-chicks-on-the-make, drinks-lined-up-on-the-bar, hell-raisin' rocker--what this band is all about. But they have a sensitive side, too, albeit on only one track. "Mississippi" is an introspective, longing-for-home, slow dance tune that is about as close as these boys are ever going to get to a ballad. I can almost hear them saying: "Ballads? Ya gotta be kiddin'! She accepts no boundaries and is not afraid to venture out into unconventional harmonic structures, often flouting the I-IV-V pop/country/folk standard. Budding songwriters would do well to get their hands on this CD and give it a good listen; first, to pick out the songs and techniques that grab their attention and evoke their emotions, second to learn that anything goes when it comes to expressing yourself. I'm impressed, which is why, on two occasions, I have co-written with Susan, the first time being an Internet co-write on "Valentine," the first track on this CD. So, with that disclosure out of the way, let me say that I am not biased -- "Valentine" would not be my pick for best song on this CD.

No, for sheer creative genius, the tongue-in-cheek "Let Me Explain" ranks way up there. With its Calypso-meets-Jimmy-Buffet feel and unusual chord structure, this is a real pleaser. Somehow, it has a universal, timeless appeal and the lyric is artfully crafted. Definitely my number two pick, but it pales in comparison to the distinctly retro "Welcome To The Club". This one takes me right back to the 60's.

"She Wants What She Wants When She Wants It" is a social commentary and cautionary tale with the moral "don't be too quick to judge". Or, perhaps it's "be careful what you wish for -- you just might get it". Either way, it's a great song, one that I watched evolve through a couple of re-writes. Who can argue with lines like "...a Homecoming Queen, a mover, a shaker, a real heartbreaker; did some damage to the football team..." and "...he wanted romance, she wanted cash..." Bottom line is that "she" ends up unhappy, supported by a sugar daddy and "he" ends up being a millionaire rock star (hint: "he" is a guitar player in the park).

The title track is buried deep at number 10. For what reason, I don't know. It's a fun, catchy song that at first reminds you of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine". It's a humorous tune, written from the viewpoint of a high school calculus teacher (Cantey's profession) to her students, some of which are mentioned by name, replete with a melodic motif from Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition. A definite treat for those who are calculus-challenged (99.999% of the population???) Just kidding; it's only 97.999% of the population, me included.

A true artist is able to create at any emotional tone and Cantey has the ability to go from flippant to beautifully sad without a blink. She can tug at your heartstrings -- which she does with aplomb -- on "Not The Same", a song about losing a loved one to Alzheimer's. If you have ever experienced it, you'll identify with it; if you haven't, you'll experience it through the pain of one who has. Heavy emotional impact here.

If you're looking for a hot-chicks-on-the-make, drinks-lined-up-on-the-bar, hell-raisin' party album, don't buy this record; this is a songwriter's album that will appeal mainly to connoisseurs of good songwriting. But there's a bit of something for everyone in its 13 tracks, including a very well done upbeat version of "Amazing Grace," the only non-original song in the collection.

You can get a copy of Sea of Calculus at CD Baby.

The Addictions on Indie-Music.com

The Addictions couldn't be further from the whining, griping, and moaning of contemporary alternative rockers. And I love this album, Here We Go Again, Patty & Abigail's debut disk on Play Like A Girl Records. Lyrically-driven, the songs on this album are a blend of pop, soft rock, blues, and alt. country. My pick hit is "Time To Fall," a yearning ballad replete with soulful violin and some impressive guitar work. "Run Away" with its interesting intervals and "Here We Go Again" with its doo wop/honky tonk blend are my other favorites. But, hey, don't listen to me; hear them for yourself at http://www.pattyandabigail.com.
